Before reaching for complicated fixes, try the basics: restart, update and — as a last resort — reset. Together they solve the majority of Fire TV problems, from frozen menus to apps that won't open.
Here's how to do each, including shortcuts that work even when the menus won't respond.
- Restart: Settings → My Fire TV → Restart, or hold Select + Play/Pause for about five seconds.
- Update: Settings → My Fire TV → About → Check for Updates.
- Factory reset: Settings → My Fire TV → Reset to Factory Defaults — this erases everything.
- Try restart first, update second and reset only if nothing else works.
How to restart your Fire TV
From the menu
Settings → My Fire TV → Restart, then confirm.
With the remote
Hold Select and Play/Pause together for about five seconds until the device restarts.
By unplugging
Unplug the power cable for 30 seconds, then plug it back in. Useful if the screen is frozen.
How to update your Fire TV
- Settings → My Fire TV → About.
- Select Check for Updates.
- If one is available, select Install Update.
- Leave the device plugged in while it restarts.
For apps, turn on Settings → Applications → Appstore → Automatic Updates. See checking your software version for more.
How to factory reset your Fire TV
A factory reset erases all apps, settings and sign-ins. You'll need to set up the device again and reactivate apps, so keep your activation codes and passwords handy.
From the menu
Settings → My Fire TV → Reset to Factory Defaults, then confirm.
With the remote
Hold Back and the right side of the navigation ring together for about ten seconds, then choose to reset.
Which fix should you try first?

| App crashes | Clear cache, restart | Reinstall app |
| Buffering | Restart router and stick | See buffering fixes |
| Update stuck | Unplug and replug | Check storage |
| Persistent problems | Update | Factory reset |
Low storage is behind many issues — see freeing up storage and clearing cache.

Frequently asked questions
How do I restart a frozen Fire Stick?
Hold Select and Play/Pause together for about five seconds, or unplug the power for 30 seconds.
Does restarting delete anything?
No. Restarting keeps all your apps, settings and sign-ins.
Will a factory reset remove my VPN activation?
Yes. A factory reset erases all apps and data, so you'll need to reinstall and reactivate the VPN app.
How often should I restart my Fire TV?
Once a week is a good habit, or whenever it feels slow.
Why won't my Fire TV update?
Low storage and unstable Wi-Fi are the most common causes. Free up space and restart, then try again.
