Most Fire TV Sticks have around 8 GB of storage, and part of that is used by the system. Install a few apps, let caches build up, and you can run low surprisingly quickly — which leads to slowdowns, failed updates and apps that refuse to install.
Here's how to check your storage and free some up.
- Check storage at Settings → My Fire TV → About → Storage.
- Uninstall apps you no longer use — the biggest and easiest win.
- Clear cache on the largest apps.
- Keep at least 1–2 GB free so updates and apps run smoothly.
How to check your storage
Go to Settings → My Fire TV → About → Storage. You'll see how much internal storage is available.
If less than about 1 GB is free, it's time to tidy up. While you're on the About screen, it's also worth checking your software version.
Seven ways to free up space
1. Uninstall apps you don't use
Settings → Applications → Manage Installed Applications, choose an app, then Uninstall.
2. Clear cache on large apps
Streaming apps often build big caches. Follow our clear cache guide.
3. Sort apps by size
In Manage Installed Applications, look at each app's size to find the biggest offenders.
4. Remove downloaded content
Some apps let you download videos. Delete downloads you've already watched.
5. Remove old screensaver or photo content
If you've synced photos for the screensaver, reduce the selection.
6. Avoid duplicate apps
Two apps that do the same job double the storage. Keep the one you prefer.
7. Restart after cleaning
A restart frees memory and finalises changes — here's how.
Why low storage causes problems
| Symptom | Why |
|---|---|
| Apps crash or close | Not enough space for temporary files |
| Updates fail | System updates need free space to install |
| Buffering | Apps can't cache enough video |
| Slow menus | The system struggles to manage files |
Freeing storage is one of the most effective fixes in our buffering guide.
How much space does a VPN app need?
Most VPN apps are small compared with streaming apps. Even so, make sure you have some free space before installing, and keep the app updated through the Appstore. Our app is available free on Amazon, and setup takes a few minutes with our install guide.
If installation fails because of low storage, free up space using the steps above and try again. Still stuck? We can help.
