Fire tablets are made to be carried around — and that means joining café, train and hotel Wi-Fi. A VPN encrypts everything the tablet sends, which is just as useful here as on a Fire TV.
Setup is quick because Fire tablets run Fire OS and use the Amazon Appstore.
- Fire tablets run Fire OS and install VPN apps from the Amazon Appstore.
- Approve the VPN connection request the first time you connect.
- IKEv2 or WireGuard handle switching networks well, if your app offers them.
- Turn on auto-connect so you're protected whenever you join new Wi-Fi.
Step 1: Install the VPN app
- Open the Appstore on your tablet.
- Search for the VPN app and tap Get.
- Or, from a phone or computer, open the app's Amazon page, choose your tablet in the Deliver to menu and select Get App.
Check the listing confirms your tablet is supported.
Step 2: Activate and connect
- Open the app and sign in, or enter your activation code. Our How to Use page explains activation for our app.
- Choose a nearby server — see choosing a server.
- Tap Connect and approve the system request to set up a VPN connection.
A key icon in the status bar shows the VPN is active.
Step 3: Make it automatic
- Turn on auto-connect or connect on startup in the app's settings, if offered.
- Turn on the kill switch if available — our kill switch guide explains why.
- Keep the app updated through the Appstore.
Battery and performance tips
| Tip | Why it helps |
|---|---|
| Use WireGuard or IKEv2 if available | Lighter on battery than OpenVPN |
| Choose nearby servers | Shorter routes use less power and are faster |
| Disconnect on trusted home Wi-Fi, if you prefer | Saves a little battery |
| Close unused apps | Frees memory on lower-end tablets |

Troubleshooting on Fire tablets
- Apps won't load when connected — switch servers, or check whether a specific app restricts VPN use.
- Can't sign in to café Wi-Fi — disconnect the VPN, complete the sign-in page, then reconnect. Our public Wi-Fi guide explains why.
- Activation code rejected — see activation troubleshooting.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use a VPN on a Fire tablet?
Yes. Fire tablets run Fire OS and support VPN apps from the Amazon Appstore.
Does a VPN drain a Fire tablet's battery?
A little. Modern protocols like WireGuard and IKEv2 are efficient, and nearby servers reduce the impact.
Can I use the same activation code on my Fire TV and tablet?
It depends on the app's activation rules. Check the product details or ask our support team before buying.
Why won't some apps work with a VPN on?
Some services restrict VPN connections under their terms. Try a server in your own country, or pause the VPN for that app if it's on a trusted network.
Should I keep the VPN on all the time?
On public Wi-Fi, yes. At home it's your choice — many people leave it on for privacy.
